The Fledgling

 This little one was learning to fly as I happened by. At first a bit frightened, the fledgling warmed up to my presence. After watching from a distance for a while, my new friend allowed me to get a closer look.







As the little ones trust in me grew, I realized that 
its faith could prove to be dangerous because,
as we know, not all humans treat life humanely.
As I began to walk away I noticed a truck full of
young men approaching. I heard of of them yell
"run it over." At that point I knew what needed to
by done. As the truck circled around for its final
run, I stepped in front of the bird. When I knew
that the men understood what I was doing, I
ushered the young fledgling to the other side of
the street, looked the men in the eyes and walked
away...
